Gnarly’s Favorite Band Logos [Part I]

There has been more than one occasion where I have listened to a band based on the band’s logo. I love the artwork some of these bands have. I have previously posted my favorite album covers over at Operation Grindcore and now I want to break this down another notch and show you folks a few of my favorite band logos. Like I said, a lot of these bands I got into based on their logos. So check it out and tell me what you think.

Hooded Menace
I first heard of this band on a music blog I used to frequent. I saw their album cover for Fulfill The Curse and without wasting a minute, I looked into this band. Their artwork was pure evil, their logo is fucking fantastic. I mean, look at it! Two grim reapers, an inverted cross, spider webs, a pentagram and cryptic fonts. It’s kind of the modernized mutation of Death’s logo, huh? What more could you want from a band logo?

Coffinworm
Even though it’s not even an ambigram, this logo is perfectly symmetrical. It’s un-fucking-believable. The spikey lettering is amazing. I just absolutely love this logo. It is definitely one of my favorites of all time. And the artwork that the band puts along with it is equally as killer. I got a recommendation to listen to this band from the bass player of Landmine Marathon. Once again, based on the logo and artwork, I was in love before even listening to Coffinworm.

Xasthur
I’ve listened to Xasthur for a while, originally from YouTube videos that didn’t even contain the band’s logo. Their absolutely amazing logo was a bonus for me. It took me a long time to actually decipher it, but even if you can’t, it’s still amazing to look at. I mean, come on. How does this logo not make you want to hear the band that uses it?

Leviathan
Actually one of my favorite logos as well as one of my favorite black metal bands. Much like Coffinworm, this logo is very symmetrical regardless of the fact that it is not an ambigram. It is cryptic and haunting and I love it. The spikey-ness of the letters makes it look more like wind than actual spikes, which adds a lot to the art. The dripping moon overhead adds a very nice touch as well.

I think I will do a second installation of this in the future. What are some of your favorite logos? Leave some feedback and let me know!

  1. Love the Wormrot Logo, blend of asian caligraphy and latin letters.
AxCx logo is just genius even if it is vulgar.
Death also has pretty cool logo I like.
