Album of The Week: BRAINOIL’s “Death of This Dry Season”

I have to give this week’s Album of The Week to Brainoil for their latest album Death of This Dry Season. This band had a huge impact on me when I reviewed this album earlier this week. When I reviewed this album, it also happened to be the first time I had heard these sludge titans. This album is a massive staple in modern sludge metal and it should be held in the highest regard. That is why I have chosen this album to be this week’s Album of The Week. You can stream the track “Gravity Is a Relic” over at Brooklyn Vegan right now and grab this record when it comes out later this month (I think).

Review: GROG – “Scooping The Cranial Insides”

By: Ross Gnarly

When it comes to goregrind nowadays, it is pretty much hit or miss. Most of the time, bands that were formed within the last five or six years who practice the art of goregrind are going to bore me. I’m not sure why, but I much more prefer Dead Infection and old Carcass. Of course, I am often proven wrong. When I was introduced to Grog I was not expecting to be as blown away as I was. These guys definitely work the goregrind aspect but they also border on a lot of straight up brutal death metal. Their music is fast and destructive and from the intro track “Toia Mai” I knew I was in for something interesting. “Toia Mai” is actually tribal chanting which slowly leads into what lies beyond. What lies beyond? Brutal aggression! The first actual track is “Beyond The Freakish Scene” and it is a punishing array of brutal grind. Technical riffing and complex, pulverizing drumming lead this album off the right way. The vocals are low, guttural growls that put a certain aspect of sheer terror into the music. Despite this being so brutal, there is still a lingering amount of melody hidden in this. Nice. Throughout the album there are amazing tracks with some unbelievably fantastic riffing. That is something I love about this band, songs like “Split 3 To Share,” “Hanged By The Cojones,” “Stream of Psychopathic Devourment” and “Anal Core” all have amazing, catchy guitar parts even though they are still grinding, furious death metal tracks, they still have catchiness and technicality to them. No More Rest For RWAKE!

My fellow Arkansans and apparent MetalSucks favorites Rwake are preparing to unleash their first album since 2007’s Voice of Omens. In my idiocy I missed out on seeing these guys live back in June. It actually wasn’t my fault, but a conflict concerning my ride to the concert. I know I, as well as a lot of the metal community, have been patiently waiting for new material from Rwake and now we have the first piece! Today I was informed that Rwake announced the title of their new album, a release date and album art. The new album will be called Rest and will be released on September 27th. Fuck yes! You can see the album art at the top of this post. Isn’t this amazing news? Yeah, it is. I know. You should all go here and pre-order Rest. Go do it. Doom-sludge don’t budge! I don’t know what that means, but it rhymed.

CANNIBAL CORPSE’s Alex Webster to Release An Instructional Book For Extreme Bass Playing

I was just informed via his Twitter that Alex Webster, famed bassist of Cannibal Corpse and Blotted Science will be releasing an instructional book on extreme metal bass playing in September. While I am not exclusively a bass player, I do dabble and I will definitely be picking this book up. It is guaranteed to have tons of tidbits and knowledgeable playing tips for death metal bass playing. I love when extreme metal musicians release instructional DVDs and books. I think it’s pretty cool. Here is the product description: [Continue Reading]

MASTODON Show Off Their Black Tongues. And It’s Goooood.

Oh bless Metal Injection! Robert has made my day by posting an album trailer for Mastodon’s The Hunter. The trailer contains a minute of a new track titled “Black Tongue” and it sounds fantastic. As was reported a while back, the band was supposed to be straying from their epic, progressive nature and incorporating a lot of “short bursts of energy” but this new song sounds a bit like Crack The Skye but is also has a bit of flare reminiscent of the bands older material. Regardless of what this sounds like to you, this track sounds amazing and I can’t wait to hear the full thing when it comes out in September. Check out he teaser below.

WEEDEATER Unleash The Mancoon!

Well, dirty sludge tyrants Weedeater have released a video for their song “Mancoon” off of Jason, The Dragon…. The video is a weird one. I will say that. I do love this song though. It was one of my favorites off of the album. I love the Mancoon in the video, tracking down the Weedeater boys with a snow shovel. I really wish I could embed the video, but I cannot, so mosey on over to BrooklynVegan and watch this doozy. When you’re done, come back here and leave some feedback. Unfortunately the video is hosted on Vimeo and takes me forever to load. I don’t know why Vimeo hates me. Be sure to pick up Jason, The Dragon… which came out on Southern Lord in March. It’s fucking Weedeater!

OBLIVIONIZED Prepare To Nullify The Cycle (Session 1: Drums)

What you see above is the first of three studio updates coming from my British brothers Oblivionized. You may remember that I have worshiped these guys on more than one occasion and now I get a reason to again. Vocalist Zac Broughton recently got in touch with me and let me in on a pretty sweet piece of information concerning Oblivionized. The band is currently in the studio recording a two-song promo titled Nullify The Cycle. This new promo will feature songs titled “The Nullification of Philathropy and “Cycle of Deprivation.” As soon as Zac mentioned new material, I was instantly interested. This promo is being self-produced by the band (as their Abhorrent Evolution EP was) and is currently being recorded. The recording is being done in three sessions. The first (the video above) is drumming, the next session to come will be the guitars and bass and finally the vocals will be laid down. After the vocals are complete and production has finished, the band will release the promo for free download.

I will be hosting these videos updates as they come in. Guitar/bass tracking will be coming in next week, so be sure to stay tuned for that. If you need something to hold you over until Nullify The Cycle promo or if you still haven’t listened to Oblivionized, head over to their Bandcamp page and jam that shit out. Check out the promo artwork after the jump.

Fuck Gold Cobra. EVILE’s Five Serpent’s Teeth Has The Best Snake Related Album Art.

I don’t for the life of me know why the hell I let news about the new Evile record pass me by. I got the e-mails a while back and pushed them aside for some reason or another. It wasn’t until recently when I received a follow-up e-mail that I took notice that Evile had not only released the killer album artwork for their upcoming album Five Serpent’s Teeth, but they had also released a thrash-tastic new track. I personally think that the band has evolved quite a bit since Infected Nations. They seem to have grown as a band and I’m digging the sound of this new song, “Eternal Empire.” Vocalist/guitarist Matt Drake had this to say about the artwork for Five Serpent’s Teeth:

“So here it is, the artwork for Five Serpent’s Teeth. As is always the case with Evile, we try and do things a bit differently from what we’ve done before, so we fancied something a bit more design-orientated this time around. It’s been done by a great artist by the name of Gustavo Sazes and he really came through for us as we were struggling to find something that visually accompanied the music, so hats off to the man! Make what you will of any meaning you think the cover may hold, much the same as you will be able to do with the lyrical content of the album; we know what it means to us, so enjoy!”

And that’s that. Five Serpent’s Teeth comes out September 26th via Earache Records. Check out “Eternal Empire” after the jump. You can buy the song from iTunes for a buck. What do you think of the band’s new artwork and song? Comment, homie.
