OCTOBER STAFF PICKS: Lane’s Three Albums To Kill Yr Idols To

These are three album that I have been listening to a lot lately and I hope you thoroughly hate them. Wink Wink.

Sonic Youth-Confusion is Sex [Plus Kill Yr Idols]

Ah, Sonic Youth’s first full length record Confusion is Sex (more so the 1995 re-release with Kill Yr Idols) will always be one of my favorites of theirs. The entire album is is dissonant, nearly inharmonious sounding (due to the usage of prepared guitars with screwdrivers) and overall unnerving to listen to at times. It is one of the most important album in the No Wave and noise rock scene and still sounds fresh today in my opinion. We need more unique sounding bands like Sonic Youth today and I really wish they would release something new. But until then, if it ever happens, I will be listening to them extensively. Especially this record.

Alice In Chains-Self Titled

I recently started listening to Alice In Chains again for the first time in quite awhile I forgot how utterly amazing their self titled record was. Everyone raves about Dirt being their best record but in my opinion it is this album that is their magnum opus. While Dirt focused more on metallic riffs and heavy rock songs, their eponymous third studio effort focused more textures, haunting melodies and varied song structure. Alice In Chains was the last record before lead vocalist Layne Stayley’s death and his dark, introspective lyrics dominate the majority of this record. In between the overall moody feel of this album, the dark subject matter and the variety of song types, I feel this is their best work. I am so glad I rediscovered this gem.

Car Bomb-w^w^^w^w

The epic return of Car Bomb with w^w^^w^w is more than simply satisfying. This record hits hard and does not let up at all. Jarring, rhythmically complex riffs deconstruct and morph into aurally assaulting bits of metallic madness. I have listened to this apocalyptic beast since I got my hands on it. If you want to read more, check out my review.
