If you’ve been reading this site for a while, you’d know I used to do Q&A’s with my good friend, and Fuck The Facts guitarist Topon Das a lot. It’s been a while since he and I have really talked, so I decided it was time to resurrect the “Talking With Topon” section of American Aftermath. So read on to find out about Fuck The Facts’ upcoming tour, new album and what Topon has been doing when not ripping that six-string.
Topon! How’s it going, man? It’s been a while.
Yeah, too long. Good to talk to you again, Ross.
From what I hear, you’ve been busy. What have you been up to?
Busy with Fuck The Facts stuff as usual and recording a lot of bands at my studio; Apartment 2. I have a new project called Merdarahta that I’ve been working on a bit recently. It’s more like noise/ambient/doom stuff. You can check it out here. Lauderdale also just released our first new song, and it’s a cover (sort of), in 7 years. You can check that out here.
But right now I’m just getting ready to hit the road on Thursday for our US tour. We do all the booking and handle all band stuff ourselves so there’s a still a lot to get done. Besides that, just trying to spend as much time with my daughter as possible before I leave for almost 5 weeks.
Word going around is a new Fuck The Facts album may be in the works. What’s the word on that?
We recorded all the music for the new album in December. Basically just locked ourselves up for the month and recorded all the music we had been working on for the past year. Mel is starting to work on the lyrics and vocals now, so when we get back in March we’ll be getting those recorded. We mainly wanted to track all the music before we left on tour. I don’t want to promise any sort of release date or anything, because we’re just working at our own pace, but definitely before the end of the year we’ll have something new out.
You guys are also prepping to hit the road in support of the vinyl release of the Misery EP. Are you looking forward to the tour?
Yes and no. Don’t get me wrong, I love touring. Playing every night, getting to see friends that I don’t see often, partying, etc. Even with the some of the downsides of touring (long drives, shitty shows, bad food, etc.) we always manage to have a really good time just because we all have a blast hanging out with each other in the band. The tough part is not seeing my daughter for so long. She’s only 2 years old, so in just 5 weeks so much changes and I hate missing it.
After the upcoming tour, what’s next for Fuck The Facts?
The main focus is on finishing up recordings that we started. Besides the album that we just recorded, we actually recorded an EPs worth of material last year. Mel just recorded her vocals for that this month, so we have that to finish up as well when we get back from tour. On top of that, there’s even 3 songs left over from the Die Miserable period that are fully recorded and just have to be mixed. Even though we haven’t released any new music in a while, we have been writing and recording this whole time. We just need to finish it all up and get it out.
Aside from your own music, you’ve been working with a lot of other bands. I posted about Letters From The Princess the other day, what other bands have you worked with recently?
I also just recently finished recordings by Constraints, World War 4 & Sleep Is For The Dead. 2012 was a pretty busy year for me at the studio, besides my own bands I also worked with Esprits Noirs, Asile, Carraway, Trench, War Nerve, Badlands, The Great Sabatini, Monolith, Motivator, Deamon, Daiquiri, Vit, Brain Weapon, Obduracy & The Sun Through A Telescope. When I get back from tour I’ll be mixing the new Biipiigwan album as well as a new Hamilton EP. I also have Dead Soul Alliance in the studio tracking an album and one of the guitarists from Letters From The Princess has a solo project that I also started recording. You can check out the page for all my recording and mixing work here.
I know I asked you back in December about doing a year-end list for the site and you said you hadn’t listened to much in 2012. Have you had a chance to check out anything from last year?
I have been starting to check out some releases that came out last year. The new Propagandhi is really good. I wasn’t really familiar with the band before, but we played a show with them and it got me to check them out more. I actually just loaded my iPod with a few other new releases that I’ll be giving some good listens while I’m on the road.
Anything you’re looking forward to this year?
