Interview: LIONS OF TSAVO’s Ryan Chamberlain + Song Premiere

Ryan Of TsavoWell, folks, I posted about Lions Of Tsavo a few days ago when they released their new song “Tunnel Giant,” which destroys. If that wasn’t enough for you, I am beyond excited to let you know that we here at American Aftermath are premiering yet another radical track from the bands forthcoming album Traverser.

I also hit up Lions Of Tsavo vocalist/guitarist Ryan Chamberlain and asked him a few questions regarding the new album, so you can check that out after the jump and then listen to the bands new song “Berlahars!”

LionsOkay, before we kick this off, I just want to say that I am a huge fan of Lions Of Tsavo and I have been looking forward to this new almost more so than most releases this year.
Thanks man, glad to hear it!

Now, onto the interview proper. Can you introduce yourself to my readers and let them know what you do in the band?
My name is Ryan Chamberlain, and I am responsible for guitars/vocals in Lions Of Tsavo, as well as handling the recording/mixing of our new album Traverser. There’s also Josh Dawkins on drums and Daine Vineyard on bass/vocals.

You guys released your last album in 2009 and I know I’m not the only person who thought, sadly, you might have been gone for good. Why so long between albums?
We did a self-released cassette/download EP called Swarm Of All The Unholy in between, but it kind of fell under the radar. Aside from that, we had some lineup changes and did some belated touring to support Firelung & the Swarm EP, spent a good deal of time writing and self-producing Traverser And then Josh broke his leg in a traffic accident, so that set everything back a good deal. But anyways, here we are with a new album we’re totally proud of and can’t wait to share with the world.

TraverserYour new album Traverser will be released soon and a lot of people are stoked to hear it. Can you tell me a little about the album?
Long story short, the whole concept for the first half of the album is Mother Nature wiping the earth clean through various plagues and natural disasters, save for one individual referred to as the “Traverser”. They are then reborn at the point where life began and forced to walk across the earthen landscapes, whilst seeing the horrors of humanity through the eyes of every creature in existence. The journey as it is, begins with the second half of the album. It is also kind of an ongoing story, that i don’t necessarily see ending with these particular songs. I guess we embraced our inner prog leanings with this one, but the whole concept was a great inspiration to us finishing the songs and giving them purpose. I’m sure some people will think we’ve just gone all Rush or something though, haha…

I am also premiering the track “Berlahars.” Can you tell me a bit about this track specifically?
Lyrically, it’s probably the most destructive song on the album, basically Mother Nature condemning humanity whilst tearing the earth apart. It’s also a sort of conversation between the “Traverser” character and nature, per se. Musically, I think it’s also one of our more adventurous songs, and the first one I wrote tuned down to F. It’s simultaneously crushing and catchy in a way.

With you guys finishing up an album have you been catching up on any new tunes? Even if you haven’t, what have you been jamming lately?
Well, while recording and mixing the album, the band that I listened to the most was definitely Killing Joke. I’m pretty much obsessed with them, and they certainly influenced the dark and spacey textures I tried to achieve.

Apart from that, I’m usually listening to old post-punk, prog, 90’s Dischord bands, Failure, 16 Horsepower, etc. I’m sure the three of us could all agree on Deathspell Omega, Yob, Melvins, Neurosis, Unsane, Today Is The Day, Russian Circles, Ulcerate, Tool, Cult Of Luna, Kyuss, Godflesh and so on.

Whats up next for Lions of Tsavo?
Well after this east coast tour here in November, hopefully next year will involve hitting up the west coast or just more touring/shows in general.

Also possibly a split release later on down the line with someone. We shall see. We already have a couple of new songs written.

Can we expect a new Early Man record any time soon? Please say yes.
As far as I know, yes, Early Man is working on a new one, and honestly I can’t wait to hear it either! I’m sure it’ll be rad. Mike never disappoints.
Lions Of Tsavo
And now, the brilliantly brutal “Berlahars” which comes off of Lions Of Tsavo’s latest effort Traverser, out November 1st on Toxic Assets.
