Corrupt Moral Altar are an amazing band that I have been a fan of since their inception. I have also struck a friendship with the bands drummer Tom Dring, who I have stated many times in the past is the owner of the best mustache in grindcore. I recently caught up with Tom to talk about his mustache, their recent signing with Season Of Mist and much more. Read on.
Tom! How are you doing, man?
I’m good! My ears are still ringing from our first show of 2014 the other night. Job done.
For those out there who might not know exactly who you are, can you introduce yourself to my readers?
I am Tom Dring, drummer for Corrupt Moral Altar. I also run a studio in the UK called Vagrant Recordings, where I produce a whole manner of filth.
First off, congratulations on the recent announcement that you guys have signed a deal with Season Of Mist! How did that come together?
Cheers! By the time our 7″ was released, we had already written and recorded an album. We were talking to a few labels and Season Of Mist offered to press the record. Of course we said yes, just look at their back catalogue!
Aside from that news, what else has been going on with you? Been checking out any new music?
I’ve been keeping busy in the studio working on new releases with We Came Out Like Tigers, Dragged Into Sunlight, Oblivionized and loads of other cool bands. Basically half my life is checking out new music. Recently I’ve been digging stuff from Famine, A Storm Of Light and Sick/Tired.
Speaking of music, when can we expect some new tunes from Corrupt Moral Altar?
Sometime soon! We’re all itching to get it out there… No doubt we’ll be posting all over the place when we know the release date for the record. No social media stone shall be left unturned – smoke signals, telegrams, carrier pigeon etc. All the latest technologies, basically.
How about Magpyes? You guys haven’t released anything since that massive split back in 2011.
Everyone is busy doing other stuff at the moment. We will put out something else, just don’t hold your breath.
Aside from pounding drums in both Corrupt Moral Altar and Magpyes, where you also handled some guitar work, you are also the owner of the best mustache in grindcore. For a while there, you lost the ‘stache, why, man? Why?
Eating sandwiches was the worst. Most public eating displays ended up with me looking like I’d fought a man made entirely of pastry. It’s back with a vengeance now though! I’m at the stage where I wake up with it in my mouth most mornings, it’s a creature of comfort adorning my upper lip.
Do you have any tips for the kids out there who would like to have a ‘stache as epic as yours?
Avoid sandwiches and soup if you want an easy ride, brush your teeth BEFORE you shower unless you want a crusty toothpaste ‘stache and lastly, come to terms with the fact that onlookers will marvel and want to touch it.
You gotta tell me what the hell is in the water in UK. It seems you just breed amazing grind bands over there these days. Aside from you guys there is Oblivionized, The Atrocity Exhibit, not to mention the legendary Napalm Death. What the hell is going on in the UK that makes people so musically aggressive?
Maybe everyone is just really angry. Furious, even! I used to write riffs in my head on crowded buses, they were the most hateful ones I ever concocted.
Do you have any upcoming shows or tours you’d like to give a plug?
We have our first outing to the European mainland at the end of the week, playing three shows in the Netherlands with Suffering Quota and Teethgrinder. (Dates below)
And in closing, what is the most non-heavy music that you just can’t help but love?
Well, Kate Bush just announced 15 dates in London later this year, I am determined to go! Also, I love a good jazz gig.
Thanks for the interview, brother. Have a good one!
Cheers! Good to speak with with you.
