Welcome to the tenth edition of Cryptic Passages, a weekly hopefully-weekly column in which I, Eric Nguyen, will be presenting for your torture, some of the most brutal, unrelenting, and hate drenched pieces of audio I’ve found journeying through the misanthropic plains of the internet. For the past few weeks, I have been absent grinding off at school and so have been unable to deliver on my weekly blood rituals. This week, I return to my place on the altar of sacrifice and offer you three fresh kills…after the jump. Continue reading »

The now defunct Low Places died a quiet death this September, announcing the cessation of their negative sludgy hardcore violence on the Facebook page of the product of their dissolution, Child Brides. Before they left however, there was talks of new material on the rise, news that ultimately dwindled into the cracks of Internet time and certainly out of my mind until now. I awoke this morning to news that Low Places have decided to finally release their final works in the form of the eponymous Black Tape. Set to be pressed on limited tape copies, Black Tape is streaming its A-Side below and can be downloaded free here. Check that and a stroll through some of Low Places history below. Keep it trill. Last week, I didn’t have the time to write up a post. And while I promised six passages, only three satanic passages will await you in this week’s cryptic chasm…after the jump for reasons you can read in the title. Continue reading »

Hey, folks. I decided I wanted to do a Podcast, so today I bring you The Aftermathcast! I’ve wanted to do a Podcast for a while now and when I finally settled on a concept, I got it recorded and here it is. The Aftermathcast is mostly music and a bit of talking. Considering the theme of The Aftermathcast is hardcore, grindcore and powerviolence, I run through a few news items pertaining to hardcore and the lot. When it comes to the music, all of the bands I play on this Podcast have released albums which are available to download for free.
Click on the listen to and/or download The Aftermathcast. You can also check out the track list down there and links to download the band’s albums. Enjoy and be sure to leave some feedback. Maybe I’ll do more of these. Continue reading »
My introduction to God’s America was when the band was still known as Seeds Of Rape. They released on album on J. Randall’s (Agoraphobic Nosebleed) label Grindcore Karaoke and I loved it. Further down the line I learned that the band had changed their name to God’s America or God’s America AKA The Seeds Of Rape, the band will answer to either. Continue reading »
According to a recent Facebook update, Full of Hell have officially finished recording their as of yet untitled sophomore LP. The band returned to record with Kevin Bernstein at Baltimore’s Developing Nations this part Thursday and are expected to release the record through A389 Recordings later this year. The sophomore effort derives from the varied and experimental approaches the band has taken through their previous splits this year(Code Orange Kids, Calm The Fire, the guilt 0f…) and will see the group up-taking more grind and noise influences. Stay tuned for updates. Stream a live video of the band on one of their latest tour ventures(12/10/2012; Pomona; Aladdin Jrs.) with Code Orange Kids and GAZA below exclusively via CVLT Nation. A new song expected to be on the upcoming album is played at 4:50.
First things first, this review is way overdue. I should have done this as soon as I got the album, but I wanted to wait and let this album truly sink in. This album did make my year end list because it’s fucking brutal and it deserved to be there. Now I will tell you a few things I enjoyed about Sacrilegious & Culturally Deficient, the debut full length album from Standing On A Floor Of Bodies. Continue reading »
Snakes are a band that I have gotten into very recently. Over the holiday I acquired a cassette version of their album Please Just Kill Me Now and it fucking rips. I mean, this shit is fucking heavy. Crushing, down-tempo powerviolence at its finest. After tearing through the album a few times, I was aching for more. Well, my wish has been granted. Thanks to Toxicbreed’s Funhouse, there is a new Snakes EP and it destroys everything in only four tracks. Continue reading »

Similar to the conflicted state of mind the character Jules Winnfield Of Pulp Fiction was in when he decided not to execute the characters of Honey Bunny and Ringo like “fucking fried chicken”, my American Aftermath writership came at a period in my life of transition, a time of both fleeting and returning tastes. In short, my idea of “music” was flipped upside down. What was once a streamlined process of music listening and discovery was overloaded and overridden by my previous months exploration into a multitude of realms and genres previously unexplored, most notable among that being my new found discovery of hardcore and the cascading effects of that discovery, which led to realms from sludge metal to pop punk.
The following thirty album list reflects the few difficultly chosen releases that stuck with me the most throughout both the bombarding ocean of releases this year and the aforementioned musical overturn. Before we actually begin, I’d like to thank the American Aftermath crew especially Ross Gnarly, Lane Oliver, and Josh Huddleston for allowing me to be a part of their team. I would also like to thank the musicians and bands that have created music for me to write about and those that have helped out in interviews and features. Last but not least I want to thank you, the readers, for giving a shit. See you all after the jump.
