Hello again, fellow Aftermathers! My prolonged absence from the American Aftermath world officially ends NOW with this penultimate annual post, a small but personally necessary pittance to the plentiful albums and artists that sustained me throughout this most bountiful year in extreme music. The following thirty item list reflects full-length albums only with an aural adherence to the hardcore and powerviolence realms as per my listening habits this year. A ton of awesome death metal revivals as well as resurgences from other notables in the general metal realm happened this year (Gorguts, Carcass, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ulcerate etc.) of which I listened(or rather actively listened) to practically NONE. I simply wasn’t feeling it at this year and intend to return to survey these releases at another time. Thanks to the Aftermath crew especially Ross Gnarly, Lane “The Machine” Oliver, and Josh Huddleston, the bands and musicians, and last but not least, you, the readers! Peep the list after the jump. Shai Hulud released their impressive fourth studio album Reach Beyond the Sun this year and the group are apparently in the midst of writing new material. A fifteen second clip was uploaded to the band’s Facebook page yesterday depicting some choice riffs being tracked. Follow the link above to check it out and listen to their track “Reach Beyond the Sun” after the break.
New York metallic hardcore legends Earth Crisis have announced a mini-tour spanning West Coast and East in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their Firestorm EP. With West Coast support incoming from Harness and Lionheart and East Coast support incoming from Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done and White Widows, Earth Crisis are set to perform live sets featuring the Firestorm EP in full along with many other rarely played songs. Peep the full tour circuit details above and stream Firestorm in full below.
Shai Hulud’s new record, Reach Beyond the Sun, dropped last week and I can say that it is quite the solid album. The band have released a lyric video for a great track from the album, “A Human Failing”. It’s a lyric video so there really is no need for further elaboration. Check it out below and be sure to pick up Reach Beyond the Sun soon!
As the release date for “Reach Beyond The Sun” nears, Shai Hulud in conjunction with Metalblade Records have been very busy keeping our ear vaginas moist. This time the group has chosen to tease us with a clip of band guitarist and mastermind Matt Fox tracking guitar for the song “The Mean Spirits, Breathing“.
There really isn’t much to say about the video other than the song clips sound fucking awesome and I can’t wait to hear the album in full. Continue after the jump to watch the in-studio session and make you buy Reach Beyond The Sun when it comes out in 19 days! Continue reading
As all of you should know by now, hardcore Shai Hulud have re-enlisted the talents of New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert to handle the vocal duties on their upcoming album, “Reach Beyond The Sun“. The band recently put the finishing touches on said album and have been teasing us with goodies ever since.
The first teases came in the form of two amazing new songs (which can be heard by going here), now the group of misanthropists have unleashed several minutes of in-studio footage. In this in-studio segment, you get to see Gilbert and band guitarist/mastermind Matt Fox work on laying down vocals and working on patterns. Yesterday the classiest dudes in hardcore, Shai Hulud, made a second track off their upcoming MetalBlade release available for streaming via Alternativepress.com. The new song is titled “A Human Failing” and boy, is it a dozy! This three-minute and thirty-second long piece of music is everything we have come to expect and love from Shai Hulud. With heavy melodic guitar and meaningful lyrics like these, A Human Failing is sure to become a hardcore anthem.
The band’s forthcoming release “Reach Beyond The Sun” will hit stores mid February. Until then, I suggest you do as I am doing and listen to the two songs that have been released over and over… Why? Because Shai Hulud is one of my favorite bands, and because Reach Beyond Sun is my most anticipated release of 2012. Continue reading
Oh, Shai Hulud. I owe an awful lot to this band as they were one of the main acts to get me into early metalcore and hardcore. They were punishing and crushing but had real metal elements like melody and structure. They have always been one of my favorite acts and I was very excited to learn that they would be releasing a new album called Reach Beyond The Sun with founding member Chad Gilbert (of New Found Glory), who performed vocals on Shai Hulud‘s 1997 debut Hearts Once Nourished With Hope And Compassion. It’s great to see Chad back at the helm of Shai Hulud, although I know it’s not permanent.
The band has just released the title track off of their new album, which you can check out below. The track sounds great to me. It’s really melodic, but it’s good. I’m pretty excited for the full album, which will be released on February 19th via Metal Blade Records. Check out “Reach Beyond The Sun” below. Continue reading
One of my favorite hardcore acts of all time, Shai Hulud, have recently put the finishing touches on their upcoming forth album and are now getting ready for their following touring cycle. Although Chad Gilbert (New Found Glory) handled vocal duties on the new album, he will not be a touring member (or an actual member) of Shai Hulud. This leaves the band vocalist-less.
In order to fix their situation Matt Fox has taken to web trying seek out people wiling to audition for the group. All you have to do is record yourself doing vocals to a few of their songs and send it to them. According to their official statement the band has no prejudices against anyone’s race or life style choices, merely just preferences when it comes to age and vices. It’s no secret that the band has had quite the revolving door when it comes to band members outside of Fox and Fletcher so it’ll be interesting to see how long the new guy or girl will last.
Continue after the jump for all the details on how to audition for the band.
I don’t know if this should be a WTF Moment or not but “A New Found Glory” seemed like a
good (terrible) pun; but as you can see, guitarist of New Found Glory has started his own record label, Violently Happy Records. Gilbert’s new label will be an imprint of hardcore super label Bridge Nine Records. The label will be just like all traditional labels and release primarily physical media.
Violently Happy records has set Candy Hearts new EP, “The Best Ways to Disappear” as it’s first release. Candy Hearts new EP is scheduled for a Nov. 7th release date. To read the full press release, an official statement from Gilbert, and a comment from Bridge Nine owner continue after the jump.
Who else is fucking stoked for the return of the mighty Shai Hulud?? The band has just announced that they have finished wrapping up the recording of their upcoming MetalBlade full length. There is huge buzz surrounding the new album because it marks the return of Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory on vocals and is the first time in the band’s history that they have recorded with the same singer twice.
Although it was never not announced, the band was singerless for about a year and they were recording with Gilbert so it shouldn’t be a shocker that they got him to contribute. Both Metalblade and the band have made official statements which can be read after the jump..
Guess what, guyz? It’s time for this weeks edition of Album Of The Week! This week I have chosen Shai Hulud‘s “Misanthropy Pure“. This album was one of my favorite releases of 2008, and has since stayed in almost constant rotation. “Misanthropy Pure” is a hard-hitting melodic hardcore work of art that consists of eleven well written songs.
Everything about this release is top-notch, whether it be the heart-felt lyrics, the expressive melodies of Matt Fox, or the fancy (but not overdone) drumming. The highlights of this album for me are the songs Venomspreader, Misanthropy Pure, Be Winged, and Set Your Body Ablaze. Now, do yourself a favor and go listen to “Misanthropy Pure“. Oh, abd make sure you catch Shai Hulud on their upcoming “Hope Within Hatred” tour.

Shai Hulud are are apparently working on some new material according to a recent Facebook posting. It reads as follows:
“Dear Interwebz, there is a small, sweaty practice room in New London where we have holed ourselves up to work out a jam or 3. Please forgive our recent lack of e-presence. But hey, there’s usually some stuff going down over at the twitter place…. Join us! twitter.com/shaihulud”
In case you didn’t know, Shai Hulud is pretty awesome. So, you should get stoked for new music from them.
Over the last few months, while at work, I have abandoned carrying my overwhelmingly bulky CD case and have been listening solely to Pandora Radio. I am not complaining about Pandora in general because, hell, Pandora has turned me on to a lot of bands I had not heard previously (Lecherous Nocturne, Venomous Concept, Squash Bowels) that I have come to love. Pandora has even rekindled my love for Shai Hulud, which I am very excited about.
However, there is one thing that has bugged the shit out of me over the last few months: Regardless of what metal station I change to on Pandora (Coffinworm, Cannibal Corpse, Shai Hulud and even HammerFall), what is ALWAYS on? Fucking Malevolent Creation. Do not take this post the wrong way. Malevolent Creation are a fucking amazing band. They are not only important as a forerunner of the Floridian Death Metal scene, but the genre of Death Metal in general. So what is this rant all about? The fact that on the aforementioned Pandora stations, they only play TWO of Malevolent Creation’s albums (Doomsday X and Warkult) and yes both of these albums are great listens, but not every day. I don’t think I can take listening to “Dead March” again for the rest of my life. I think I will personally be seeking a metal station that does not harbor Malevolent Creation around every fucking turn or at least play some jams off of Retribution. Ya’ feel me? Come on Pandora, give a guy a break!
And that was my rant. Good day.
