Welcome to the seventh edition of Cryptic Passages, a weekly column in which I, Eric Nguyen, will be presenting for your torture, some of the most brutal, unrelenting, and hate drenched pieces of audio I’ve found journeying through the misanthropic plains of the internet. Three satanic passages await you in the cryptic chasm…after the jump. Continue reading
2012 was an amazing year for me. I’ve already put out two of my Best Of lists and I have two more to go. 2012 was great year for breakout EPs and 7″ releases. A lot of killer bands put out spectacular EPs this year and so I decided to put together a list of those also. Here goes. Continue reading
It’s that time of year again: when we tell all of you folks what our favorite albums of 2012 were. Well, like last year I have compiled a few different lists and I wanted to start off with this one.
Who doesn’t love split albums? I mean, getting not one, but two bands on a single record is a thing of beauty. I listened a shit-ton of split albums this year and it was a pain in my ass narrowing down to only ten splits. This is what I have come to think of as the best split releases of 2012.
I fucking love Water Torture, the drum and bass powerviolence band from Buffalo, New York. Hell, they ended up on my Favorite Albums of 2011 List. They are fucking amazing and as they prepare their new 7″ Shellfire!, they just released a free live album called Furniture City Live which was recorded this April in New York. It’s great. Stream it and download it below. WATER TORTURE!
Well, it’s that time again. Time for year-end lists. Last year I my list was kinda iffy around this time because I just started reviewing albums in September. This time around I have had an entire year to listen to, review and enjoy a shit-ton of records. God knows how many albums I’ve reviewed this year and I honestly don’t feel like counting them all. I know it’s a lot. On top of that, I’ve probably listened to and enjoyed twice as many albums as I reviewed, if not more. I managed to narrow my original list of 50 albums down to 22, that the best I could do. I absolutely love all of these albums and it was a privilege to listen to them and make friends with a lot of these bands.
Of course, as always there are albums that didn’t make my list because I didn’t get a chance to enjoy the albums. Some of those albums are new releases from Burzum, Raspberry Bulbs, Batillus, Full Of Hell, Entrails, Fuck The Facts and Ptahil as well as many, many more. Most of the albums that I didn’t get to include were not included because I didn’t get to give them a thorough listen. I regret this because I know a lot of these albums would be fucking amazing. I guess it’s time to get to the list, huh? This list includes signed as well as independent bands because I see no reason to exclude a band because they lack the support of a major label. A lot of these bands seem far superior to signed ones, so lets just see who ranked where, shall we? [Continue...]
You all remember the Grinding Aftermath compilation I did with Grind To Death, right? Well, you should! It’s an amazing compilation that took loads of planning and preparation. Me and Alex worked our asses off to get this thing put together, with the donation of cover art by Guger Art, and get it released on time. Well, Alex did some killer shit and got the entire compilation uploaded to Bandcamp, where it can now be streamed and downloaded for free! Featuring well known bands like Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Fuck The Facts and Kill The Clients as well as absolutely killer underground bands like Water Torture, Hivesmasher and Kuntpuncher. Thanks to everyone who has already downloaded and enjoyed this compilation and I hope everyone else who hasn’t checked it out digs it! Stream and download the compilation after the jump!

I gotta give J. Randall credit. The dude has signed some killer bands to his Grindcore Karaoke label and one of the latest projects to get dumped in his lap is the untouchable grindviolence act Water Torture. I gotta say that from the first listen I loved this band. Crusty as fuck, everything is smashed under a bulldozer-sized boulder of noise. Sludgy riffing, powerful, hammering drumming and raw, pissed off vocals, what else can you ask for? The band was recently chosen as the Bandcamp Artist of The Week over at Operation Grindcore and for good reason, this shit rules. Check these dudes out and download their self-titled record for free right here. Stream this bitch below.
